Detecting the undetectable: Lungscreen Australia and EIZO’s life-saving partnership

How Lungscreen Australia is fighting lung disease through early detection
Lung disease is a silent killer, claiming thousands of Australian lives every year. Early detection can mean the difference between life and death, and Lungscreen Australia is on a mission to catch these deadly diseases before they spread.
Lungscreen’s team of highly specialised radiologists, physicians and oncologists work tirelessly to detect the faintest signs of lung disease in high-risk populations like miners and smokers. But early detection requires more than just expertise – it demands cutting-edge medical imaging technology.
That’s where EIZO’s high-precision, diagnostic monitors come in. These industry-leading monitors enable Lungscreen’s specialists to identify the minuscule abnormalities that could otherwise be overlooked.
“Early detection is very, very important,” says Dr Es’haghi, a Director and Radiologist at Lungscreen. “Having the right tools, including the right monitors, helps our doctors to detect these diseases early.”

Detecting lung disease and lung cancer before it’s too late
Lung disease and lung cancer often don’t announce themselves until treatment is futile. Together, they’re the second most common cause of death in Australia, so raising awareness about the importance of early detection is central to Lungscreen’s mission.
Lungscreen focuses on two key populations: those working in industries such as mining and construction, and smokers.
Lung diseases like pneumoconiosis and silicosis impact workers who are exposed to tiny dust particles. The problem is, “these workers often have no idea this is happening to them,” says Dr Es’haghi. “They’re not aware of the long-term effects of this inhalation and, as time goes on, these nodules become worse and worse, and eventually the patient suffers.”
Like victims of other lung diseases, smokers can also be unaware of the danger developing inside their lungs until it’s too late. “Lung cancer has the highest fatality rate of all cancers in Australia – and the world – but there isn’t the same awareness of it as there is of other cancers,” says Dr Es’haghi.
While lung cancer is notoriously difficult to treat once it has reached an advanced stage, studies show that early detection through low-dose CT scans can reduce mortality rates by 20% compared to traditional chest X-rays.
Arming specialists with precision tools to combat a deadly threat
Lungscreen depends on EIZO’s high-precision diagnostic monitors to detect early signs of lung disease.
“Good systems, including good monitors, are essential to detecting the tiny abnormalities that develop within the lungs,” says Dr Es’haghi. Thanks to EIZO’s high-resolution medical imaging solutions, radiologists can detect even the smallest changes in the lungs, leading to early intervention and treatment.
It is also critical to maintain consistent diagnostic accuracy across multiple locations. Thanks to EIZO’s RadiNET Pro, EIZO’s centralised quality control system, every monitor in Lungscreen’s network – whether in a hospital or a radiologist’s home – meets the highest standards of performance and complies with DICOM standards. “It’s crucial these monitors maintain their quality standards, so we frequently run remote testing,” says Dr Es’haghi.
EIZO’s monitors have also been pivotal in the training and certification of radiologists who require highly specialised skills to detect lung disease and lung cancer.
“EIZO’s team has gone above and beyond by providing us with advanced monitors for training and certification of radiologists,” says Dr Es’haghi. “ It’s this level of commitment from EIZO that makes them truly stand out.”

In the fight against lung disease, every detail matters
